Assaults (violent acts) are one of the top ten causes of disabling work injuries. The NCCI just published a new 26-page study entitled ”Violence In The Workplace“. This report includes lots of very interesting conclusions based upon nationwide accident statistics on work-related homicides and injuries.

Some of the more interesting findings include:

The jobs that have the highest homicide rates are: service station attendants, barbers, taxi drivers, security guards, door-to-door vendors, and lodging managers.

“Workplace homicides are not crimes of passion committed by disgruntled coworkers and spouses, but rather result from robberies”.

“The majority of workplace assaults are committed by healthcare patients.”

“Homicides account for 11% of workplace fatalities”.

“Homicides due to robberies… make up 69% of all work-related homicides. While homicides due to coworkers are about 12%.”

Liberty Mutual Insurance published a research report called Slips and Falls in Restaurants – Reducing Worker Risk. It concluded “ours is the first study to provide concrete evidence that slip-resistant shoes are effective in the field”. “The study showed that wearing slip-resistant shoes can reduce employee’s risk of slipping by half”!

Slips and falls on the same level are a leading cause of on-the-job injury accidents in restaurants. They are caused by wet floors, greasy floors, a hectic work pace, poor floor cleaning practices, food and beverage spills, high employee turnover, and crowded working conditions.

The Liberty research report cited above was the result of a two year study that involved 396 workers in 36 restaurants in six states. A total of 989 slipping incidents were reported and analysed. You are invited to read the entire report yourself – just click on the above link to view it. I’ve read it multiple times and the most interesting findings to me are:

slip-resistant shoes reduced the rate of slipping by more than 50%

62% of the restaurants used improper floor cleaning procedures

for each .1 increase in the floor’s COF, the rate of slipping decreased by 21%

rushing increased slipping 2.9 times

distraction increased slipping 1.7 times

walking on a contaminated floor increased slipping by 14.6 times

While this study was specific to restaurants, the researchers feel that the findings may be transferable to other industries with high rates of slip and fall accidents, including - retail, grocery stores, hospitals, and nursing homes.
