EHS Management Software – What Is It? Do I Need It?

August 23, 2013 No Comments

EHS Management software is a set of tools that tracks incident data (injuries, accidents, environmental impacts, near hits, etc) and then helps you to understand that data.  Some software solutions may also help you with compliance (OSHA Logs, MSHA Logs, Needle Stick Logs…) and some may assist with training and file storage, but the key factor is having a set of tools that makes your job more efficient and can point you in the right direction when it comes to your EHS program.

There are a vast number of software solutions out there.  Some will run on a single computer, while others may run on the internet and can be accessed from anywhere.  Each of the software solutions have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to the type of platform they operate from; the key things to look for are the quality of the tools, their ease of use, and do they make your job easier.

Whether you are looking for a compliance solution or a data management solution, the following items are the most important in any EHS software suite: Incident Report forms, Incident Investigation software, and Data Trending reports.  Your goal is to make your workplace safe and protect your company.  These three items allow you to maintain compliance with accurate incident reports, investigate incidents and come up with solid corrective actions to ensure the incidents don’t happen again, and then give you insight as to where, when and how your incidents are occurring so you know where to focus your attention and efforts.

So the questions remain: Do I need it?  Is it worth it?  Of course you can continue to track your incidents on excel spreadsheets, trend the data by digging through your numbers, and perform investigations on paper or Microsoft Word.  But, how much time does that take away from your day?  How many incident reports are lost?  How many corrective actions from investigations never get completed once the report is complete?  Being able to run a quick report, see where you are having issues, and head out into the field to spend time coaching your employees is priceless.  Being able to track corrective actions to completion ensures all of your hard work during the investigation wasn’t in vain, and that your company is progressing toward becoming a safer place to work.  EHS Management software will make your job more efficient: saving you time, saving your company money, and helping your employees return home unharmed.
