Inadequate lighting contributes to many on-the-job accidents.   One study shows that “accidents can be reduced about 20% by improving lighting conditions”.  But how do you know if you have enough lighting for a specific task or area?

Before conducting your first lighting survey you will want to review the fundamentals of illumination.  Here are two links to a couple of  excellent industrial lighting references, both with the same title – Lighting at Work and Lighting at Work.   Also, another illumination guideline can be found here.

Light meters are an indispensable instrument that all safety professionals should be familiar with.  Consider purchasing a light meter for use when conducting  plant inspections and accident investigations.  Inexpensive light meters can be purchased that will allow you to measure lighting levels at your workplace.
