NFPA National Fire Codes

April 30, 2013 No Comments

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has promulgated over 300 standards aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of fires.  Their fire safety standards have been adopted by OSHA, insurance companies, and municipalities.

You can purchase each of their nearly 300 standards individually at a cost of over $10,000.   Or, you can purchase an entire set (called the National Fire Codes) in one of three different forms –

  1. An 18-volume softbound set for $1,460.  It contains 16,500 pages.
  2. A hard-copy subscription service for $1,295 a year that includes 18 loose leaf binders, a master index, and twice a year updates.

If you do not have the resources to purchase a complete set of the National Fire Codes, you can often find copies of them:  at your local fire department, the home office of an insurance company, or at a major library.

Another option would be to purchase the individual standards that you use the most.   The ones that I frequently use are:  #70 National Electric Code,  #101 Life Safety Code,  and #30 Flammable & Combustible Liquids.
