Join Your Local Safety Organization

An employers’ occupational safety and health program can get stale without the periodic infusion of new ideas. One way to learn what’s working at other employers in your area is to participate in your local safety organizations.
There are two large national/international safety associations that likely have a local chapter in your area. Both offer a variety of venues for networking with other occupational safety and health practitioners.

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is the oldest and the largest society of safety professionals in the world. At the ASSE, safety “professionals work together to advance their professional career and status as a safety professional, improve their company’s safety performance and advance the overall SH&E profession.” I have been a professional member of the ASSE for over three decades. The ASSE offers both professional and student members: networking opportunities at monthly local chapter meetings, webinars, individual safety awards, professional development conferences, and technical publications. - The National Safety Council (NSC) is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. They have a network of local chapters throughout the USA. Local chapters (e.g. http://www.oksafety.org/ ) offer: safety conferences, on-site training, company safety awards, employment ads, training materials, and on-line training.
