Rate Your Safety Program

Have you ever wanted to conduct a comprehensive self-assessment of your safety management system (SMS)?  You know, the type of safety program evaluation that the giant corporations do at their branch locations.  Here’s your chance to complete such a comprehensive audit – and it’s totally free!

The Institute for Work & Health (IWH) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada has developed a 20-page self-assessement form that takes only 20-minutes to complete.  Having worked for two giant international corporations, I can verify that the questions on this form are similar to those we used.

This self-assessment form however is shorter in length then those used by large companies because it needs to be more general in scope.  Yet I found the IWH form’s abbreviated length to be just about perfect for medium and smaller sized companies with fewer than 1,000 employees!

After completing this self-audit, you will be able to:

  • benchmark your scores against similar sized companies in your industry
  • identify your program’s strengths and weaknesses so you can target your weak areas with improvement plans
  • measure the progress of your safety program over time by completing this form periodically in the future

I actually completed the entire 20-page form.  The above illustration is a screen shot of my scores.  It indeed took me about 20-minutes to finish, and the scores that I received when done were consistent with where I thought they should be.
